For the mid-to-high handicapper still trying to break 90, treat every hole as a par 5 and try to make par or birdie. If you look at this in three hole segments, then if you make no bogies or worse hen you will hit 90 -- one "birdie" break 90. It is sometimes just as hard for the high handicapper to get on the green in three on a par 3 as on a par 5. Par 4's are often the easiest for a high-handicapper to get on in three and two putt. This way the majority of holes can be "parred" by the high-handicapper and they can measure their game in the 6 three hole segments of 15 strokes each.

The course of play here really isn't the point, but for me it just happened to be the one that made me realized the importance once again of management...I had a friend who used to say "the hole doesn't start for a hundred yards." What he meant by that was that you didn't have to worry about the tee as much as you did you second shot...the tee is important, but you can save virtually any tee shot...the important thing out of the box is setting up...and most of the time, you just don't the lumber...any time a person tells you to leave the big dog in the bag is probably talking from experience...I urge you to listen...position is important off the tee...use what's appropriate, not what's impressive to your group...cause when you catch the edge of that fat driver head and it spins off in some direction that's gonna screw up your entire hole, that's not so impressive.

I just played 18 holes there last week. This was the second time I played this Johnny Miller course. I am not going to talk about any specific hole. But if you are like me, i.e.. having a high handicap and trying to avoid completely humiliating yourself in front of your boss and co-workers.. let me tell you just one thing: do not touch that big stick. Use your 3-wood, you would be glad that you followed my advice. Peter,, handicap:30+, age: 19-4 |
