If you swing too fast you will be likely to hit any kind of bad shot. To help you not to swing too fast, swing at the same speed during your down swing as you do in your back swing

I used to play with an elderly gentleman that could not hit the ball far say drive 160-175. But he made solid contact every time, hit the 3 iron 125 always near the green, then chipped pitch and run with a 7 iron within 15 feet of the pin almost every time. He rarely boggied a hole and never hit a shot that made the news highlights. But he was single digit handicapp. Maybe we try to hit the ball too hard. The designers of todays clubs spend thousands of dollars to perfect them and all we have to do is just make good contact. Think about how hard we, including myself, make this game. Good Luck!

Get an electronic metronome from a music store. Calibrate it on the range by setting the Beats Per Minute and swinging in time with the metronome's beep. Once you have found the proper setting that matches what you consider a good result with your ball flight (both distance and direction). Use that as your base line setting. Then fiddle with the setting, making it slower, and see the result. Likely, you will hit the ball even further. Once you find this setting, remember it. Then when you go to the range to practice, or before a round, pull out the metronome and get into the rhythm. I'm sure that you will make more solid contact, produce a more predictable trajectory, and control your direction better. It worked for me and I dropped 5 strokes off my average game in less than 3 weeks.

When you are swinging any club, say to yourself "Alisdair Kidugan" Alisdair on the backswing and Kidugan on the remainder. You will be amazed how smooth your swing will become and you will have great tempo.

Nice and easy does it...and you better believe it...Look at Tiger Woods...tell me how that skinny guy can drive 345 yard greens (i saw it happen) and a man the size of Staddler averages less than 290...timing...control of your body will give you better timing...and the faster you move, the less in control you are...you don't have to swing hard to kill it, you have to swing right...nice and easy.

I'm not a long knocker (240-250 avg.). But every once in a while I catch myself trying to outdrive Tiger Woods. When this happens, I'll go to the range and leave my tennis shoes on to hit balls. The shoes with no spikes make me concentrate on my balance more, thus making me slow my swing down. Remember not to decelerate.

I watch a lot of golf on TV. My favorite golfer is Ernie Els and I think he has the smoothest swing in the world! So to make my swing more smooth, I always try to think about the image of Ernie I have seen on TV. PS, I read Ernie just won the European Masters, his 4th win of the year (2003)! Go, Ernie!
