Here's the thing...I take a 3I about 200 yards, just a hair less if I take it easy...but i also hit a 5W about that distance, little more...but let's say you 200 from the green, and you think you can make it...you would want to use the iron if you could here because a wood places a lot less, virtually none, back spin on the ball...and when the ball hits the green and then jumps backwards, that's from the backspin put on it from the iron...you never see a wood cause that...but let's say you can't hit the 3I any good...take a 5W, and swing less, about 3/4 normal...leave space for the bouce and the roll...as far as hitting long irons better...practice practice practice...and sweep it.

All right, my last tip to you guys today. We have to understand that the impact angle of long irons is much shallower than that of shot irons. Good players do not leave much of a divot after a long iron shot. So you must do everything possible to AVOID ABRUPTILY PICKING UP THE CLUB DURING THE EARLY STAGE OF THE BACK SWING. As they often say "swing slow and low."

I don't know this is a legitimate tip. But I have always tried to avoid using long iron clubs. Look I am not pro and I hardly get into situations where a long iron is absolutely needed. I just use 7 or 5 wood.
